An official police investigation has been opened, following the tragic events in Monday’s meeting between Tenerife and FC Andorra in Spanish football’s 2nd tier.
Yesterday’s Segunda clash was abandoned late on, after Tenerife star Jesús de Miguel was stretchered from the field of play amid alarming scenes.
Taken out by a flying challenge from Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono, De Miguel was taken straight to a nearby hospital, where he was placed in intensive care after suffering a cardiac arrest.
In tragic news for the 30-year-old’s family, friends and all at Tenerife, De Miguel’s death was confirmed on Tuesday.
Owing to the nature of the incident which culminated in his passing, an official investigation has since been opened by not only the Spanish football authorities, but also the National Police.
As per a report from ESPN:
‘Spanish police have opened an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter after Tenerife forward Jesús de Miguel died following an on-field collision.’
It is added that ‘under Spanish law, deaths from non-natural causes, including accidents, are subject to judicial investigation.’
We at Get Football send our condolences to all affected by Jesús de Miguel’s untimely passing.
