Sergio Ramos has spoken about not making it into Luis Enrique’s Spain squad for the World Cup.
“The World Cup? Of course, it was one of those great dreams I had to fulfil. It would have been my fifth, but unfortunately, I’ll have to watch it from home,” he said in quotes picked up by Marca.
“Last season was tough, with injuries and adapting to a new club and a different city. I worked body and soul to recover and to feel like my old self again, guided by the objectives and dreams that one always sets oneself and sets out to achieve.
“It’s hard, but every day the sun comes out again. Absolutely nothing will change in me, not my mentality nor my passion nor my constancy nor the effort and dedication of 24 hours thinking about football,” the former Real Madrid captain wrote on Instagram.
“Sergio Ramos, the best defender in the world,” wrote Morocco international and PSG right-back Achraf Hakimi on Twitter after Ramos was omitted from the La Roja squad.
Hakimi is going to the World Cup with Morocco and has become a key player for PSG alongside the experienced Ramos. Ramos’ run of games and form this season had opened up the possibility of a return to the national team having put his injury issues to one side and becoming a regular starter for PSG.
