Sacked or resigned? Media clash over Xabi Alonso’s Real Madrid departure

Contrasting reports surrounding the reasoning behind Xabi Alonso’s exit from La Liga giants Real Madrid have on Monday evening come to the fore online.

This of course comes fresh off the capital heavyweights making official the departure of their head coach.

After slipping to defeat at the hands of arch rivals Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final on Sunday, Los Blancos announced:

‘Real Madrid C. F. wishes to announce that, by mutual agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been decided to bring his time as first team coach to an end.’

The wording of their statement has since sparked widespread chatter, amid the claim that the call to part ways was a mutual one.

A whole host of alternative reports, however, have since surfaced in the media.

Real Madrid socio Pepe Álvarez, for one, is amongst several to have assured that Alonso in fact made the decision to vacate his post:

‘Xabi hasn’t been fired, he’s resigned, exhausted from the ego and the constant lack of respect from the locker room that have intensified this week in Saudi Arabia and due to the total lack of support from the club these past months.’

Others, including the reliable Javier Rodríguez Pascual, though, have pointed towards the very opposite, adamant that Alonso was dismissed:

‘Xabi Alonso was sacked. Agreed dismissal or whatever you want to call it. But a sacking.’
