Robert Lewandowski outlines what makes Barcelona teammate Gündoğan such a special player

Barcelona star Robert Lewandowski has today provided an insight into what he feels sets teammate İlkay Gündoğan apart from other players across the continent.

As much, of course, comes fresh off both playing a central role in Barcelona keeping alive the club’s European campaign on Tuesday night.

After welcoming Serie A champions Napoli to Catalunya’s capital, Xavi’s troops ultimately emerged on the right side of a 3-1 result, booking their spot in the quarter-finals of the Champions League in the process.

Hitman Lewandowski, meanwhile, rounded out the goalscoring on the night, with midfield maestro Gündoğan having split Napoli’s backline wide open in the buildup, setting Sergi Roberto free courtesy of an inch-perfect pass.

In the aftermath of his side’s crucial win, the former was in turn quick to lavish praise on his teammate and close friend.

Lewandowski has now shared a dressing room with Gündoğan at two clubs, with the pair having been reunited in Catalunya after previously lining out alongside one another in Germany with Borussia Dortmund.

Safe to say, then, that ‘Lewa’ is well qualified to speak on just what makes Gündoğan such a differential player.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, the Pole went on to highlight his teammate’s intelligence and positional awareness on the pitch as 2nd to none, with Lewandowski convinced that Gündoğan would have no problem playing football ‘in the dark’:

“Gündogan is a player that you can play with in the dark. He’s perfectly positioned. He shows you that standing smart is better than running stupid.”
