Revealed: The staggering amount it would cost Barcelona to keep Frenkie de Jong for the next 2 seasons

An insight into the financial sacrifice which would be required by Spanish giants Barcelona to keep hold of midfield star Frenkie de Jong through the remainder of his contract has today been provided.

And the news will no doubt shed some light on exactly why the Blaugrana are understood to have opened the door to the Dutchman’s potential exit.

As per a report from the reliable RAC1, keeping hold of De Jong this summer could ultimately end up costing the board in Catalunya’s capital a whopping €77 million.

This figure consists of the €30 million still owed to Ajax for his signature, and the 26-year-old’s wages.

The latter, as things stand, amount to around €47 million, through the summer of 2026, when De Jong’s current Barcelona contract is due to expire.

This comes with the gifted midfielder having agreed to defer his salary during the Covid-19 pandemic, to aid the financial crisis at Camp Nou.

And, according to RAC1, as much has left De Jong with two options: Either renew his deal with a ‘rationalised’ salary of around €15 million, or be sold to the highest bidder this summer.

When it comes to the fee being sought to move their engine room star on, Deco and co. are understood to have informed the likes of Premier League giants Manchester United and Chelsea that around €100 million will be required to strike a deal.
