Real Madrid underwhelming in key areas against Rayo Vallecano despite dominating most of the game

Last night Real Madrid suffered a 3-2 shock defeat at the hands of local rivals Rayo Vallecano at the Campo de Fútbol de Vallecas in the 14th round of La Liga.

Even though Los Blancos dominated many aspects of the game, they were unable to show the necessary quality in key areas, note AS.

While Real Madrid completed more passes during the match at a higher accuracy (447, 85.7% accuracy) than Rayo Vallecano (368, 80.4% accuracy), the reigning European champions’ opponent were more effective in the final third, where they completed 158 passes as opposed to the 101 completed by Real Madrid. This is especially underwhelming when it is taken into account that Real Madrid had 54.8% possession of the ball.

Despite having 14 shots throughout the game, only two of Los Blancos’ attempts made it on target, both of which resulted in a goal.

If Real Madrid want to continue staying on the right track, they need to be more effective in the final third of the pitch and improve their effectiveness in front of goal.
