La Liga giants Real Madrid have taken the first major step towards a potential reunion with former manager José Mourinho.
This comes amid confirmation that Los Blancos have opened direct talks with the Portuguese, and his entourage.
The name of iconic tactician Mourinho has of course reemerged as a prominent one in the headlines in Spain’s capital over recent weeks.
Amid an ongoing search for a replacement for Álvaro Arbeloa for the 2026/27 campaign, Florentino Pérez and co. have earmarked the club’s one-time headmaster as one of several high-profile options.
And as alluded to above, late this week, the brass at the Bernabéu have made clear that Mourinho is a leading candidate for the role.
As per a report from market insider Fabrizio Romano:
‘Real Madrid have started José Mourinho operation with direct contacts now taking place. Up to Florentino Pérez: he will decide if Mourinho returns or not.’
It is also noted that Benfica, the 63-year-old’s current employers, want Mourinho to stay put in Lisbon ‘at all costs’.
