Real Madrid star crowned AFCON champion as Senegal stripped of title

Real Madrid star Brahim Díaz has on Tuesday benefitted from some frankly incredible news.

This comes amid confirmation that Senegal have been stripped of their Africa Cup of Nations title, won back in January.

The AFCON final was of course shrouded in controversy, as Senegal’s players left the field of play after a late penalty awarded to hosts Morocco.

After a lengthy wait, Senegal eventually reemerged, only for the aforementioned Brahim to fluff his lines from the penalty spot.

From here, the Lions of Teranga secured an extra-time victory, by a solitary goal to nil.

As alluded to above, though, on Tuesday, a full two months on, the result has been overturned, with Morocco crowned AFCON winners for 2026.

As per a report from journalist Fabrizio Romano:

‘Morocco have been announced as AFCON winners with final result overturned by CAF. Senegal have been declared to have forfeited the match with Morocco declared 3-0 winners by official statement.’
