Real Madrid star accused of being ‘stupid’ vs Marseille

A member of the defensive ranks at La Liga giants Real Madrid has over the last 24 hours come in for some heavy criticism.

The player in question? Dani Carvjal.

Right-back Carvajal played his part on Tuesday night, as Real Madrid kicked the club’s continental campaign into gear in a Champions League meeting with Olympique Marseille.

And though his teammates ultimately managed a 2-1 victory, the experienced Spaniard endured something of an outing to forget.

Introduced early on in place of the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold, Carvajal was shown a straight red card during the 2nd-half.

As much came after the 33-year-old was responsible for a needless headbutt on Marseille no.1 Gerónimo Rulli.

Carvajal, as alluded to above, has since come in for widespread criticism for his actions on Tuesday.

And front and centre amongst the critics of the right-back was Dutch icon Ruud Gullit.

Speaking as part of his role as a pundit in the game’s aftermath, former AC Milan and Chelsea standout Gullit accused Real Madrid’s captain of sheer stupidity:

“For a player with so much experience, what Carvajal did was so stupid.”
