Real Madrid set to dip into winter market as extent of David Alaba’s injury confirmed

The powers that be at Real Madrid are preparing to enter the market for a new central defender this January.

This comes after key stopper David Alaba suffered a serious injury during the club’s La Liga meeting with Villarreal on Sunday.

Though Carlo Ancelotti’s troops romped to an eventual 4-1 triumph, their victory was soured by Alaba being helped off the field of play late in the first half.

And post-match medical tests have since confirmed the worst, with the former Bayern Munich man having suffered an anterior cruciate ligament rupture in his left knee.

“Following tests carried out on our player David Alaba, he has been diagnosed with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. The player will undergo surgery in the coming days,” Real announced in a statement.

With such a pivotal member of the club’s defensive ranks ruled out for the season, and fellow central defender Éder Militão also nursing a torn ACL at present, what, then, is the plan of action at the Santiago Bernabéu?

Well, as alluded to above, an insight into precisely that was provided a short time ago.

As per the reliable Mario Cortegana of The Athletic, Florentino Pérez and co. “will look to sign a replacement in defence” during the winter transfer window.

It is as of yet unclear just who Real intend to target, but a loan deal, potentially featuring an option to buy, looks the most likely play at present.
