Real Betis star wins BBC award

A member of the defensive ranks at La Liga outfit Real Betis has this week secured for himself a prestigious individual award.

This comes amid confirmation that Hector Bellerín has been named global champion at the BBC Green Sport Awards 2025.

Full-back Bellerín has for his part long been actively pushing for improved sustainability across the world of sports.

The former Arsenal man, for example, does not drive to training over the course of the week, but instead takes either public transport, or makes use of a bicycle.

This comes as just a small part of an important message regarding the environment long pushed by Bellerín with fans and sports personalities alike.

And as alluded to above, this week, the 30-year-old has seen these efforts aptly recognised, by way of the accolade for ‘global champion’ at the BBC’s Green Sports Awards ceremony.

Speaking after receiving his prize, Bellerín explained:

“I feel very grateful. It is totally unexpected. I’ve been doing this stuff for a very long time, talking about sustainability not just in sport but in our everyday life.

“I really appreciate it because it means that all the work and effort behind the scenes, to promote a message that I think is really important, has been seen and appreciated.”
