Real Betis star issues apology to Espanyol fans after penalty celebration

Real Betis star Pau López has issued an apology to any offended by his antics during the final moments of the Verdiblancos’ meeting with Espanyol.

Shot-stopper López is for his part fresh off a match-winning performance on Sunday evening.

With his side 2-1 up deep into injury time in a La Liga meeting with Espanyol, the latter were afforded a spot-kick.

Javi Puado stepped up to take responsibility from 12 yards, but saw his effort well saved by López.

The latter followed up with a passionate celebration, before turning to the home crowd and cupping his ears in defiance.

López is an Espanyol youth product, with his gesture, in turn, having not gone down at all well inside the RCDE Stadium.

Speaking to DAZN post-match tonight, the subject of his celebrations was in turn put to López himself.

And the twice-capped Spanish international made use of the opportunity to say sorry:

“I was trying to stretch out as much as possible to make it feel overwhelming for him. I talked a bit with Doblas, and he advised me to dive to the left. If anyone felt offended, I apologise. I had to celebrate.”
