Raúl García has admitted that he wants Marcelino to remain in charge of Athletic Club despite rumours surrounding his future.
“In the year and a half of the coach’s tenure, I think the team has been maturing, competing in a very different way to how we did some time ago and I do think it has taken a step forward. We would have liked things to have gone better for us at times, but having European options until the last matchday has to be seen as positive,” the 35-year-old said in quotes reported by Superdeporte.
“He has given us a lot, he knows us perfectly, he has the ability to manage a group with very young people, to whom he has to give his time. It’s very clear to me, there is no other option. I have said it to him and I say it to everyone. It’s good not only for me, but for the youngsters and for the club.”
The former Atlético Madrid player also stressed that his opinion is based on what he has “seen from the inside”. “I have more information than those who are not in the dressing room and I think I can say that he is the best coach we can have. If he continues it would be good news for the club.”
