Racing star fumes over Mbappé penalty: ‘VAR should have intervened’

Racing Santander star Iván Martín has revealed his take that the penalty awarded to Real Madrid during today’s meeting between the clubs should have been overturned.

Racing and Real are of course currently locked in action in Santander, in a La Liga clash.

As things stand, the visitors lead by three goals to nil, cruising towards another three-point haul. Kylian Mbappé was responsible for setting the goalscoring in motion on the evening, inside the opening quarter of an hour.

After going to ground under contact in the hosts’ penalty area, the Frenchman stepped up to slot home the ensuing spot-kick in style.

Ensuing replays, however, highlighted the fact that the contact involved was minimal, with Mbappé having certainly made the most of the situation with his fall.

And adamant that the decision should have been overturned as a result is the aforementioned Iván Martín. Drawn on the penalty incident at half-time, the Racing midfielder insisted:

“Penalties like Mbappé’s should never be called. The VAR should have intervened. The contact isn’t enough. Munuera Montero told us that he had seen a penalty on Mbappé and that the VAR confirmed the contact to him.”
