Quique Setién joins Villarreal until 2024

Villarreal have announced the arrival of Quique Setién until 2024. After tempting Mauricio Pochettino, the La Liga club called Setién to be the replacement for Unai Emery late on Monday afternoon, and after a meeting that ended in the early hours of the morning, the Cantabrian coach finally put pen to a paper on a deal beyond the current campaign.

After his unsuccessful spell at Barcelona, Setién decided to take a break from coaching and now, at the age of 64, he returns to La Liga. Villarreal will be Setién’s fourth top-flight club after spells at Las Palmas, Real Betis and Barça.

Setién will take his first training session today (Wednesday) starting at 10.30am, and at 1.30pm he will be presented to the media. He replaces Emery, who has left to join Premier League side Aston Villa. Setién will take over a Villarreal side in seventh place in the La Liga table.
