Philippe Coutinho’s move from Barcelona to Aston Villa explained

Philippe Coutinho officially joined Aston Villa from Barcelona last week. The Athletic has outlined the fees involved in the deal.

After lengthy talks with Villa, Barcelona agreed to sell Coutinho for just over £17 million, despite setting an initial price of £33 million when the Brazilian playmaker joined the Premier League side on loan in January.

Barça wanted to get the deal done by the end of the financial year on 30 June to help balance their books and meet La Liga budget rules.

The Athletic also report that a 50 per cent sell-on clause was inserted into Coutinho’s four-year deal.

The 29-year-old agreed to take a large wage cut from his staggering £480,000-a-week wages to fit into Villa’s structure which sees the top earners take home approximately £125,000 a week.

The wage bill has increased every year since Villa won promotion back to the Premier League.
