Pedri part 2? Barcelona & RFEF on collision course as Pau Cubarsí summer plans confirmed

An insight into the plans of the Spanish Football Federation for Barcelona youngster Pau Cubarsí has been forthcoming online.

And the news will no doubt be met with widespread concern on the part of all of a Barcelona persuasion.

This comes amid confirmation that the RFEF intend to call the stopper up for not only the upcoming European Championships, but the Olympic games, too.

Cubarsí, for his part, has of course exploded onto the scene in Spain across the year to date.

After first being afforded a chance to impress by Barcelona boss Xavi amid a personnel crisis at the heart of the Blaugrana’s backline, La Masia’s latest sensation has since gone on to establish himself as a near-undisputed first-team starter.

Just this week, Cubarsí, at just 17, scooped Man of the Match honours owing to a frankly remarkable display en route to Barca sending Napoli packing from the Champions League.

In turn, it did not come as a surprise when the defender was afforded a maiden call-up to the Spanish senior squad for the country’s upcoming friendlies against Colombia and Brazil.

Whilst as much has been welcomed by those in a position of power at Barcelona, however, what will not are Spain’s alleged plans for Cubarsí this coming summer.

As per a report from Mundo Deportivo, it is all but guaranteed that the teenage talent will be called up to La Roja’s squad for the summer Olympics later this year.

Not only that, but, in the case of Cubarsí continuing along his current trajectory, he is also viewed as a near shoo-in for Luis de la Fuente’s Euro 2024 squad.

Such a development would not be at all welcomed by Barcelona, who are desperate to avoid a repeat of the ‘Pedri case’.

Midfielder Pedri lined out for Spain at both the Olympics and Euros back in 2021, with many of a Blaugrana persuasion adamant that the effects on the fitness of the 21-year-old remain to the current day.

The Camp Nou brass, as a result, are ready to stand their ground in assuring that Cubarsí is afforded some much-needed rest ahead of next season.
