Spanish outfit Girona have on Thursday announced the departure of head coach Míchel with immediate effect.
This of course comes fresh off the Catalans being condemned to a damaging relegation this past weekend.
Owing to a 1-1 draw with Elche as part of the final round of fixtures, Girona closed out the La Liga campaign in a lowly 19th spot.
Just a season on from making history with a place in the Champions League, the Blanquivermells are in turn facing up to a year in La Liga 2.
And as alluded to above, Girona will be forced to navigate the choppy waters of Spanish football’s 2nd tier without the contributions of their long-time headmaster.
As per a statement across the club’s website and social media platforms on Thursday:
‘Míchel Sánchez will not continue at Girona FC. The club would like to express its most sincere gratitude to the Madrid coach for the dedication, commitment and professionalism with which he has led the first team, as well as for the human, close and respectful treatment he has maintained at all times with the members, fans, management and all the Club’s employees.’
