Official: Javier Manquillo reunites with Rafael Benítez at Celta Vigo

La Liga outfit Celta Vigo have this evening announced a fresh addition to the club’s defensive ranks.

The player to have taken his talents to Balaídos with a view to the 2nd half of the campaign? Javier Manquillo.

The name of full-back Manquillo has of course taken its place front and centre in the headlines in Galicia across the week to date.

This comes after word was forthcoming that the out-of-favour Newcastle United man had been identified as a chief January target on the part of the powers that be at Betis.

Rafael Benítez, for his part, brought Manquillo to St. James’ Park in the first place, during his own stint on the touchline on Tyneside.

Still a firm believer in the talents of the 29-year-old, Celta’s boss, in turn, made clear his desire to facilitate a reunion before the month was out.

And, as alluded to above, on Sunday, his wish has been granted.

As per an official statement across the club’s website and social media platforms:

‘RC Celta already has its second signing of the winter market: Javier Manquillo. The Madrid native (Chinchón, May 5, 1994), who returns to LaLiga after a 6-year career in the Premier League, joins the celestial team, after leaving Newcastle, with a contract until June 30, 2025.’

Manquillo’s move is understood to have come in the form of a free transfer, after Newcastle agreed to terminate the contract of the full-back.
