Official: Barcelona star suffers serious knee injury

La Liga giants Barcelona have on Sunday announced a major setback on the personnel front.

This comes amid confirmation that Andreas Christensen is facing up to a prolonged incoming spell on the sidelines.

Danish international Christensen sparked concern in Catalunya’s capital late yesterday evening, upon word coming to the fore that the defender had picked up a fresh fitness problem.

Christensen was withdrawn from Barcelona’s squad to face Villarreal as a result.

On Sunday morning, the former Chelsea man was put through an ensuing round of medical tests at the Ciutat Esportiva.

And in a blow for club and player alike, the tests in question revealed a serious injury.

As per a statement across Barcelona’s website and social media platforms:

‘The first team player Andreas Christensen has a partial tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee as the result of an unfortunate twist of the knee in Saturday’s training session. After tests carried out on the player, a conservative course of treatment has been chosen. The player’s recovery time will depend on his progress.’
