Official: Barcelona announce first summer signing

La Liga giants Barcelona have on Wednesday at last announced the club’s first signing of the summer.

The player to have put pen to paper on terms with the Blaugrana with a view to next season? Joan García.

The name of goalkeeper Joan has of course dominated the headlines in Catalunya’s capital for several weeks now.

This comes after widespread confirmation was forthcoming that the 24-year-old, fresh off a spectacular season with Espanyol, had been identified as something of a priority signing by the Barcelona brass.

Amid a search for a replacement for the out-of-favour Marc-André ter Stegen, Hansi Flick and co. earmarked Joan as the perfect profile.

And as alluded to above, on Wednesday, the Spanish champions have officially landed their man.

As per a statement across Barca’s website and social media platforms:

‘FC Barcelona activated the release clause of player Joan Garcia. The cost of the clause was 25 million euros plus CPI. This Friday, the player will sign a contract with the club for the next six seasons, until June 30, 2031, in a private ceremony at FC Barcelona’s offices.’
