Official: Atlético Madrid announce triple injury setback

La Liga giants Atlético Madrid have on Wednesday announced a trio of setbacks on the personnel front in the club’s first-team ranks.

This comes owing to developments in the Rojiblancos’ showdown with Barcelona on Tuesday evening.

Atlético are of course fresh off an outing to forget last night.

After making the trip to Catalunya’s capital to lock horns with reigning La Liga champions Barca, Diego Simeone’s troops surrendered a first-half lead en route to an eventual 3-1 defeat.

And their woes did not end simply with the final scoreline…

In a lengthy release across the club’s website and social media platforms on Wednesday, Atléti confirmed that all of Johnny Cardoso, Álex Baena and José María Giménez suffered injury blows at the Spotify Camp Nou:

‘Johnny Cardoso, Álex Baena and José María Giménez underwent imaging tests on Wednesday morning, after which the medical services of our club determined the injuries they suffered after the match that pitted us against FC Barcelona.

‘The American midfielder, who left the game in the 14th minute, suffered a severe contusion to the posterolateral angle of his left knee without associated joint injuries.

‘Meanwhile, the Spanish midfielder, who left the pitch in the 62nd minute, is suffering from a low-grade muscle injury in his left thigh.

‘Finally, the Uruguayan center back, who finished the match feeling discomfort, suffered a low-grade muscle injury in his right thigh.

‘They will all undergo physiotherapy sessions and rehabilitation work, and the evolution of their injuries will determine their return to competition.’
