Official: Athletic Club star drops out of Spain squad

The Spanish national team have on Thursday been dealt a fresh blow on the personnel front. This comes amid confirmation of Nico Williams departing the country’s camp prematurely.

Winger Nico had for his part featured in both of Spain’s Nations League fixtures over the course of the last week.

In the latter outing, against Croatia on Tuesday, the 24-year-old even managed to round out the scoring in an eventual 4-1 triumph for the world champions.

As alluded to above, though, in his side’s upcoming clashes with Czechia and Croatia, Luis de la Fuente will be forced to make do without Nico’s contributions.

As per a statement across the website and social media platforms of the Spanish national team on Thursday:

‘Nico Williams has withdrawn from the Spanish national team camp. The Athletic Club international reported discomfort in his left thigh following the match against Croatia in Seville. His progress was closely monitored during the rest day, and due to the persistence of the discomfort, he did not participate in Thursday’s training session.

‘Following the medical tests carried out today by the Medical Services of the Spanish Federation, it has been decided to remove him from the current training camp in order to continue with the recovery process.

‘The Athletic Club medical staff have been kept informed at all times about the player’s progress, and he will continue his treatment and recovery under the supervision of his club.’
