Negotiations between Barcelona and Gerard Piqué have stalled over a salary reduction, according to Relevo.
The centre-back decided to help the club financially last season, when he deferred a part of his salary and Barça were able to sign Memphis Depay and Eric Garcia, however, talks this time around are not progressing.
Barça and Piqué’s agent were this week working to get La Liga to validate the salary reduction that would be applied to the centre-back in a new two-year contract, the same as his remaining contract but with a much lower wage.
The Catalan centre-back, who at 35 years of age has already accepted that he will not have the prominence he once had on the pitch, despite the fact that he will be an experienced figure in the dressing room, even considered playing the remaining two years of his contract for free. This is what he told Joan Laporta, the vice-president Rafa Yuste and the director of football in a meeting last Wednesday, according to AS.
It remains to be seen when and how the talks between the sides will resume.
