‘More than deserved’ – Cristian Romero snipes back at Real Madrid after Atlético’s derby victory

Atlético Madrid star Cristian Romero has on Sunday evening hit back at Real Madrid, amid the ongoing fallout from today’s capital derby. This comes by way of the assurance that the Rojiblancos were fully deserving of their eventual three-point haul.

Real Madrid have spent the hours following today’s Metropolitano showdown bemoaning the state of officiating over the course of the 90 minutes in the derby.

En route to an eventual 2-1 defeat, Los Blancos were nothing short of adamant that both Cristian Romero and Lee Kang-in should have been shown straight red cards.

In the end, neither were ultimately dismissed, but Dean Huijsen did see red for Real Madrid for a last-man challenge.

Post-match, the Santiago Bernabéu hierarchy therefore sanctioned the release of an official statement, labelling the refereeing in the capital nothing short of ‘dreadful’.

This saga has since largely overshadowed what was an underwhelming performance on the part of José Mourinho’s side all told.

And as alluded to above, it was precisely as much which Cristian Romero was keen to highlight following the full-time whistle on Sunday. In quotes cited by journalist Fabrizio Romano, Atlético’s summer signing assured:

“Madrid is red and white! Don’t let anyone try to shift the focus away from that. The 3 points were more than deserved! Pride, effort, and so much heart from this team.”
