Liverpool’s Mo Salah joins Barcelona legend Lionel Messi in history books

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah on Wednesday secured for himself a place alongside Lionel Messi in the recent history books of European football.

This comes owing to his exploits in Liverpool’s Premier League meeting with Aston Villa.

Arne Slot’s Reds marked their return to action on Wednesday night, making the trip to Villa Park for a meeting with Unai Emery’s Villa.

When all was said and done, the Premier League leaders were forced to make do with a share of the spoils, in a 2-2 draw.

And it was that man Salah who again proved himself the star of the show.

Amid what has been nothing short of a remarkable individual campaign to date, the Egyptian opened the scoring, before later laying on the assist for Trent Alexander-Arnold’s equaliser.

And, in the process, Salah joined Barcelona icon Lionel Messi in the history books.

As revealed by statisticians Opta:

‘Mohamed Salah is the first player to score and assist in 10 different games in one of Europe’s big-five leagues in a season since Lionel Messi in 2014-15 (10 for Barcelona).’
