Lionel Scaloni: “We want Messi to continue.”

Lionel Scaloni has become part of the history of Argentine football, following in the footsteps of César Luis Menotti and Carlos Salvador Bilardo.

Menotti won the World Cup in 1978 and Bilardo in 1986. The World Cup is Scaloni’s third title with Argentina, after winning the Copa America and the Finalissima.

After the final against France, he dedicated the victory to his parents and said that “it is a moment to enjoy”. “I know you always say family [to say thank you], but my parents have given me a way of understanding never to give up, never to go against anyone, but always to go forward. Today it paid off, but the important thing is that when it doesn’t, people can understand that a coach wants to do things well. I’m lucky to be here and I’m grateful to everyone,” he said in words reported by AS.

“I don’t think we realise it yet, but it’s a moment to enjoy. Above all, it’s the people. We, who live from this, and who have been through thick and thin, we are used to these things, but above all, it is an incredible pleasure.

When asked about Messi’s farewell, he said that Argentina’s doors will always be open. “Messi should have a place in the next World Cup, we want him to continue. If he wants to continue playing, the number 10 shirt will always be ready for Lionel.”
