Lionel Messi: “The club needs to look at itself.”

Lionel Messi gave a candid post-match interview after Barcelona’s defeat to Osasuna on Thursday night, which confirmed Real Madrid as La Liga champions. The Barcelona captain looked crestfallen but did not mince his words saying where it has gone wrong for the Catalan side this season.

Quique Setien’s men have struggled since the restart while Real Madrid have not dropped so much as a point – something that Messi acknowledged was impressive – but, nonetheless, he could not hide his frustration.

We did not expect or want to end the season like this but it just sums up the year for us. We are an average, weak team that can be beaten by anyone who plays with more intensity or desire. We don’t create or score enough. Madrid did what they needed to: since the restart they haven’t lost and fair play to them. But we ourselves have helped them win it because we’ve dropped a lot of points that we shouldn’t have. So, we have to be self-critical starting with the players but also across the club as a whole…we are Barcelona and we are obliged to win every game, whoever it is against.
