La Liga president Javier Tebas hopes Barcelona can sign Lionel Messi

La Liga president Javier Tebas says that Barcelona could not register Lionel Messi today due to Financial Fair Play, but added that he hopes the Catalan club can eventually find a way to bring the PSG forward back to Camp Nou.

“Today we can’t register him, but there is still a lot of time left. We are awaiting a viability plan. As a league, I hope Barcelona make the necessary moves to get Messi in. I’m a fan of Leo Messi, I think he’s the best in the world, and I hope they do it. But obviously, we are not going to change any of the economic rules approved by the clubs so that Leo Messi can join,” said Tebas on Messi’s possible return in words reported by Mundo Deportivo.

As Mundo Deportivo previously reported, Barcelona’s board of directors, chaired by Joan Laporta, have the intention of bringing Messi back ahead of next season. The Argentinian has still not renewed his contract with Paris Saint-Germain, where his current deal expires at the end of the season.

The Argentina international’s arrival as a free agent will come down to Financial Fair Play and being able to fit into the salary limit set by La Liga. Blaugrana head coach Xavi Hernández is also keen for Messi to return. Barça hope to sign Messi for the next two seasons and believe that his return could represent between 25 and 30 percent of the next season’s revenue.
