La Liga: 3 things from Saturday’s action

Matchday 26 is underway in La Liga 2022-23 and we take a look at three things from Saturday’s action.

1) Gabri Veiga scores again

Celta Vigo beat Espanyol 3-1 away from home on Saturday with goals from Gabri Veiga, Iago Aspas and Carles Pérez. Veiga now has nine goals and three assists from midfield this season and has been involved in a goal every 138 minutes. No wonder he is attracting so much interest from Europe’s top clubs.

2) Atlético beat Valencia

Antoine Griezmann gave the home side the lead with a neat finish. Yannick Carrasco scored in the second half after a one-two with Rodrigo de Paul. Atlético then added a third when Álvaro Morata picked out Thomas Lemar at the back post and Frenchman duly obliged with a fine header to put the game to bed. Atlético’s strong home form continues; Valencia haven’t beaten them away from home since 2011.

3) Rayo held at home

Rayo Vallecano were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Girona. Rayo took the lead twice through Isi Palazón and Óscar Trejo but a brace from Girona’s Viktor Tsygankov gave them a valuable point in the capital. Palazón sent a penalty over the bar after Trejo touched it to him just like Robert Pires and Thierry Henry tried to do for Arsenal all those years ago.
