As reported by SPORT, Real Madrid are looking to strengthen their goalkeeping department due to the lack of consistency shown by Kepa Arrizabalaga and Andriy Lunin, when they have deputised in Thibaut Courtois’s absence.
Although manager Carlo Ancelotti has openly admitted that “there is no debate in goal”, the future of both players is up in the air for next season. Neither goalkeeper has made the position their own and they don’t share the characteristics the club desire.
The Italian manager chooses between the two keepers on a game-to-game basis, although this is mainly down to the unconvincing performances of both players. The two keepers don’t have the manager’s full trust and confidence like Courtois has.
The hierarchy at Los Blancos do not approve of both keepers competing for the number one position and would prefer there to be an established starter with an adequate backup. Kepa would ideally want to extend his stay at the Bernabéu next season, but this is unlikely as Chelsea are asking for €25m for the Spaniard, who will turn 30 in October.
