German national team head coach Jürgen Klopp has this week opened up on why he will be pulling for Barcelona over Real Madrid in El Clásico.
The latest edition of Spanish football’s most famous fixture is of course set to be contested this weekend.
In the knowledge that an eventual victory would see them surge a full nine points clear of their arch rivals in the La Liga table, Hansi Flick’s Barcelona will welcome Real Madrid to the Spotify Camp Nou.
The matchup is expected to draw hundreds of millions of viewers from across the globe, hopeful of taking in another goal-filled affair in Catalunya’s capital.
And amongst those watching on from afar will be the aforementioned Jürgen Klopp. Speaking during an exchange with the media this week (as cited by Goal), former Liverpool boss Klopp confirmed:
“Of course I’ll watch El Clásico between Barcelona and Real Madrid! I’ve watched this game at every stage of my life.”
Drawn on which of the two Spanish heavyweights he will be cheering for, the German tactician continued:
“In the past, I was more of a Barcelona supporter because I was against the actions of Pepe and other Madrid defenders. Today, I support the better team. And looking at things at the moment, that is probably Barcelona…”
