Real Madrid head coach José Mourinho has revealed his take that the group of players responsible for the club’s remarkable comeback victory over AS Roma would have been pummelled across a 90-minute clash.
Real Madrid of course conjured up just their latest famous ‘Remontada’ on Wednesday evening. After falling into a two-goal hole at the Stadio Olimpico, Los Blancos rattled off a trio of late goals to emerge on the right side of a 4-3 result.
The turnaround came after a whole host of substitutions for the visitors, with the likes of Bernardo Silva, Arda Güler, Endrick and Carlos Espí introduced to proceedings off the bench.
The post-match narrative has in turn centered on this group of players, amid widespread calls for more consistent starting opportunities.
Speaking to the media in the game’s aftermath, however, José Mourinho was quick to shut such chatter down… Drawn on the role played by some of his fringe players in the recovery against Roma, Real Madrid’s headmaster assured:
“If the team that finished the game started… we would’ve lost 5-0. It worked in those last minutes, because it was a specific situation; it wouldn’t work for 90 minutes.”
