João Cancelo: “I grew up with Ronaldinho as an idol, I’m proud to wear the Barça shirt.”

João Cancelo’s loan deal at Barcelona is set to come to an end in June, however the Portuguese player has reiterated his desire to stay at the club.

Cancelo joined the Spanish giants last summer on loan, after falling out with Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola. The defender has been impressive during the loan spell and has become an important member of Xavi’s side.

However, due to the delicate financial situation of the Catalan club, the 29-year-old may not get his wish to stay in Spain and could instead be handed a Premier League lifeline. City would like to cash in on the Portugal international this summer, however they would like to sell him on a permanent basis rather than on another loan.

Barca have the option to sign the full-back for £34m, but will be limited again in the summer by strict financial regulations. The player’s agent, Jorge Mendes, will attempt to get the treble winners to lower their asking price or even get them to sanction a loan with an option to buy.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Cancelo remains unsure on his future but ideally would like to continue to wear the Barca shirt next season.

He said: “Loan from Man City? I don’t know my future yet but I’d like to stay at Barcelona.

“I grew up with Ronaldinho as idol, I’m proud to wear Barça shirt.”
