Jan Oblak: “There is no such thing as pretty football, I just want to win.”

Speaking on Cadena SER’s El Larguero programme, Atlético Madrid goalkeeper, Jan Oblak, discussed the impressive season his club are enjoying.

On LaLiga

At the moment we are fine. We started the season strongly. We are not favourites, just candidates. We have to continue this way, but we still have a long way to go until the end. Let’s hope we can carry on getting results so that we will be in with a chance of winning the league at the end.

On his father

My father was a goalkeeper and I wanted to be like him. I’m sure he was better than me. He was a really good keeper and always played football in our city. Ever since I was a boy I wanted to be like him.

Atlético 2020/21

We are playing in a different way. But in terms of ambition, Atlético will always be Atlético. We are improving how we play. We have changed the system a little, although we can still play a 4-4-2. The whole team has to defend well. The system with three centre-backs helps us going forward and lets us keep our shape so that we can play some good football. For me, there is no such thing as pretty football, I just want to win. The important thing is to look at the table and see where you are.

Simeone said you are: “The Messi of goalkeepers”

It’s very nice for Simeone to think that about me. For me, Messi is the best player. I am doing my best to help the team get results. There are a lot of great goalkeepers about, I really value consistency over many years. Simeone is a great coach. It’s very difficult for a coach to stay at the same club for so long.
