Olympique Marseille head coach Roberto De Zerbi has moved to make clear his anger with developments in his side’s meeting with Real Madrid.
This comes chiefly owing to the decisive penalty awarded to Los Blancos late on.
Marseille of course made the trip to Spain’s capital yesterday evening, for a Champions League opening round showdown with the aforementioned Real Madrid.
When all was said and done, it was the latter who emerged on the right side of a hard-fought 2-1 result.
A pair of Kylian Mbappé spot-kicks, either side of half-time, proved the difference upon the full-time whistle sounding.
The 2nd, though, came amid highly controversial circumstances.
After Vinícius Jr. attempted to cut back inside the Marseille penalty area, the ball struck the arm of the unfortunate Facundo Medina, who had gone to ground in an attempt to deal with the situation.
The majority were of the opinion that the decision to award a penalty was incorrect.
And as alluded to above, sharing such a viewpoint is Marseille headmaster Roberto De Zerbi.
Drawn on the incident post-match, Italian tactician De Zerbi vented:
“The second penalty? It’s a disgrace. That was never a penalty. You know better than me. Real Madrid created noise the day before the game.“
