Iker Casillas announces he is gay

Former Real Madrid and Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas tweeted on Sunday that he is gay.

Casillas recently split from his ex-wife and journalist Sara Carbonero. Casillas wrote: “I hope they respect me: I am gay #happysunday”.

The 41-year-old retired in 2020 after a spell in Portugal with FC Porto. Casillas was part of the Spain side that won three successive major tournaments across Euro 2008, World Cup 2010 and Euro 2012, earning 167 caps for the national side.

In a hugely successful career, he also won the Champions League three times and La Liga five times.

Some Spanish reported that it could be a joke after former Barcelona captain Carles Puyol responded with the message: “It’s time to tell them about us, Iker”, along with a heart emoji.

Casillas has since deleted the tweet, which was ironically posted due to the media linking him to new women every week, according to Diario AS.
