“If you can sign Bellingham” – Dani Carvajal on Barcelona using more academy stars than Real Madrid

Real Madrid star Dani Carvajal has provided his take on the one central factor behind arch rivals Barcelona leaning more heavily on the club’s academy than his side at present.

The subject of breakthrough young talents has of course taken its place front and centre at Barcelona across the season to date.

This comes owing to the emergence of two more La Masia starlets, in the form of Lamine Yamal, and Pau Cubarsí.

Despite being just 16 and 17 years old respectively, wide-man Lamine and stopper Cubarsí have already carved out regular roles for themselves in the first-team setup under the watch of Xavi, looking set to act as two pillars at the Camp Nou for years to come.

This follows the breakthroughs of the likes of Gavi and Alejandro Balde in seasons gone by, with Héctor Fort and Fermín López also expected to continue to grow in stature in Barca’s colours over the years ahead.

On the other hand, turning attentions towards the other half of the Clásico divide, Real Madrid’s success, for the most part, continues to be based largely on signings from other clubs, rather than internal production.

Speaking in an interview with Partidazo COPE this week, the subject was in turn put to the aforementioned Dani Carvajal.

Questioned specifically on the reasoning behind as much, the Spanish international was in no two minds, in highlighting the financial gap between La Liga’s two biggest clubs at present:

“Barca use more academy players than Madrid? I think the real difference is the financial situation of each club. When you’re not doing well financially, you have to use the academy. And when you’re Madrid, and you can sign Jude Bellingham, you sign him.”
