How do Bayer Leverkusen replace Xabi Alonso?

Football management is a ruthless business. A few good results can spark idolisation, but a better offer—or a misstep—can end a tenure in the blink of an eye. For clubs on the rise, success breeds attention from European elites, and Bayer Leverkusen are no exception.

Xabi Alonso is set to step down as Bayer Leverkusen manager at the end of the season, with a move to Real Madrid looking increasingly likely.

After leading Leverkusen to a historic unbeaten Bundesliga title and domestic cup double last season, the 43-year-old Spaniard leaves big shoes to fill at the BayArena.

This season has seen Bayern Munich reclaim their position at the top of German football under Vincent Kompany, to little surprise from free bets, and it leaves the Leverkusen hierarchy with crucial decisions to make as they aim to challenge again in 2025/26.

In this article, we assess three leading contenders to replace Alonso and lead Leverkusen into their next chapter.

Cesc Fabregas

Former Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas has emerged as one of the frontrunners for the Leverkusen job. Currently managing in Serie A with Como, the 38-year-old Spaniard is building a promising reputation in coaching after his illustrious playing career.

Fabregas represents a logical continuation of Leverkusen’s current playing philosophy, with his possession-based approach likely to appeal to a squad already accustomed to similar principles under Alonso.

The connection between the two Spanish midfield maestros extends beyond nationality to a shared football vision. Both were schooled under Jose Mourinho, Pep Guardiola, and Vicente del Bosque’s managerial excellence.

Reports suggest Leverkusen have already made initial contact with Fabregas’s representatives, though they face competition from RB Leipzig, who are also monitoring his situation closely.

Erik ten Hag

After an inconsistent spell at Manchester United, Erik ten Hag finds himself at a crossroads. The Dutchman departed Old Trafford in October 2024 after guiding United to an FA Cup final win but failing to meet expectations in the Premier League.

Leverkusen might be the perfect platform for Ten Hag to rebuild. His previous success at Ajax—where he fostered attacking football, nurtured youth, and competed deep into Europe—demonstrates the kind of profile that aligns with Leverkusen’s identity.

He also brings Bundesliga experience from his time managing Bayern Munich’s youth side, meaning a cultural adaptation wouldn’t be required.

With a more cohesive structure and less chaotic media environment, the BayArena could offer ten Hag a far better fit than England ever did.

Oliver Glasner

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner represents perhaps the safest option among the three candidates, bringing extensive Bundesliga experience and a proven track record of success in German football.

The Austrian has impressed during his tenure at Selhurst Park, transforming Palace’s playing style and securing their Premier League status with relative comfort. Before his move to England, Glasner built his reputation in Germany with successful spells at both Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt, notably guiding the latter to Europa League glory over Rangers in 2022.

Long linked with a return to Germany with RB Leipzig, Glasner’s potential availability this summer has put Leverkusen on alert. His familiarity with Bundesliga football and tactical flexibility would prove a good match.
