Girona, Villarreal & Athletic Club – Iván Martin future latest

A fresh insight into the future of Girona star Iván Martin has on Thursday come to the fore online.

The info comes courtesy of Relevo, and points towards a trio of La Liga clubs as playing their part in what could soon become something of a transfer saga.

Midfielder Martin, for his part, linked up with the aforementioned Girona last summer, from Villarreal.

And the 25-year-old has since gone on to establish himself as a pivotal figure in the engine room ranks of Blanquivermells boss Míchel.

All told, Martin has racked up 30 La Liga appearances, chipping in with five goals and two assists along the way.

And yet, his continuation at the Estadi Montilivi, even into next season, is far from assured.

As much comes with Villarreal boasting a buyback option on the club’s youth product, coming in at a cut-price €4 million.

It is, in turn, not ruled out that the Yellow Submarine could activate this clause – which will rise to €6 million in 12 months’ time – in the summer.

From here, Martin could then either remain at the Cerámica, or be moved on once more for a profit.

And, in the case of the latter scenario, the attack-minded midfielder already has a preferred landing spot in mind – Athletic Club.

A Basque native, Martin is understood to dream of returning to his home city of Bilbao, to line out for Ernesto Valverde’s Athletic.

It is currently unclear whether or not the interest is mutual, but it adds another layer to what could soon develop into quite the saga in Spain’s top-flight.
