Germán Pezzella’s role at Real Betis after new deal

As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Real Betis defender Germán Pezzella has put pen to paper on a new deal that commits him to the club until June 2026. After dismissing any suggestions that he could be leaving the club, by agreeing a contact on fresh terms, the Argentine is set to play a crucial role in the Green and Whites squad.

Pezzella has made 23 appearances in La Liga this season, accumulating three yellow cards and scoring one goal. This season, the centre-back has formed a crucial partnership with fellow defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos.

The 32-year-old was part of the defensive unit that kept a clean-sheet in the club’s 2-0 victory at Cadiz last Friday with the two centre-backs impressing in this victory. The Argentina international is set play an important role in Betis’ season, who will look secure a European qualification through their league position, while being competitive in the UEFA Conference League.

Pezzella is seen as a crucial component of Manuel Pellegrini’s squad in the dressing room and on the pitch and therefore it was of paramount importance to renew the deal of the player. His experience will aid Pellegrini’s side as they look to finish the second half of the season as strongly as possible by navigating European football and climbing up La Liga.

Pezzella joined Real Betis from River Plate and spent two seasons at the club. The defender then moved to Fiorentina before returning to Betis in the summer of 2021. Since then, the centre-back has played a pivotal role in his team’s consecutive European qualifications and in the 2022 Copa title.

His new deal will see him extent his stay at the club to 2026, at which point he will be 35 years-old.
