Gerard Piqué’s Kings League hits back at Ligue 1 & Mbappé with Champions League dig

A humorous back and forth between a pair of high-profile social media accounts has piqued widespread attentions in Spain this weekend.

This comes after former Barcelona star Gerard Piqué’s ‘Kings League’ organisation refused to take a jibe on the part of Ligue 1’s Spanish platform on ‘X’ lying down.

The drama was sparked on Friday, when the Ligue 1 Español account made use of the Champions League quarter-final draw to aim a lighthearted dig at the aforementioned Piqué.

With French champions Paris Saint-Germain having of course been pitted against Barcelona, the page in question unveiled a post, showcasing a pair of photos from the last occasion on which the two sides met.

One photo shows Piqué pulling on the shirt of Kylian Mbappé, whose hat-trick on the night guided PSG to the right side of an eventual 4-1 result at the Camp Nou.

And added is the caption: ‘And thus the Kings League was born’.

As much comes as a reference to the Kings League tournament founded by Gerard Piqué, on the back of the stopper’s retirement later that same year, in 2022.

Safe to say, however, that the Spaniard, and his organisation, have had the last laugh.

In a response which has since gone viral across social media, the Kings League’s official ‘X’ account unveiled two images of their own, one highlighting the fact that Piqué is a four-time Champions League winner, and the other the fact that Ligue 1, as a collective, have managed just one title since the competition was rebranded all the way back in 1992:
