From the Basque Country to Norfolk – How Borja Sainz found his feet at Norwich City

It didn’t quite click for Borja Sainz in Spanish football. Five goals from 79 games was all he could muster as he struggled at both Deportivo Alavés and Real Zaragoza.

It took a move to Turkey then subsequently Norwich in order for the 23-year-old to show how good he can be. With 8 goals and two assists in the first 11 games of the EFL Championship season, Sainz has certainly done that.

Performances like this have seen the youngster crowned EFL Player of the Month for September.

Having already matched his record from last season, the winger is now targeting promotion as his target for the season.

When speaking to Marca Radio, Sainz made these intentions clear: ‘The very difficult challenge is coming up, which is to take Norwich to the Premier League. I think we can aspire to the Play-offs and then, well, whatever happens… I think the team has to take it one game at a time.

Norwich are currently sat in 7th place in the Championship, just one point from those coveted Play-Off places, and it certainly isn’t out of the realms of possibility.

With the side also only four points off automatic promotion, it is also very possible to achieve this should Sainz & co. find a solid run of form.

On the success he has found since moving to England, Sainz said ‘The most important thing is the confidence I have in myself. I feel it when I’m on the pitch. For me, that’s everything…
