Fresh refereeing drama as Real Madrid star scores vs Sevilla after risking red card

The topic of officiating has taken its place front and centre in the chatter across the Spanish football landscape for the latest occasion on Sunday evening.

This comes owing to developments in the La Liga meeting between Real Madrid and Sevilla.

The two sides are currently locked in action at the Santiago Bernabéu, with hosts Real boasting the advantage owing to a goal on the part of Arda Güler.

Teed up from a difficult angle on the edge of the visitors’ penalty area, midfielder Arda directed a sumptuous left-footed effort into the top corner.

Many, however, are of the opinion that the Turk should not even have been on the pitch at the time of his strike…

Midway through the first-half, Arda was involved in a head-turning incident in midfield. Dragged back whilst attempting to surge forward to join an attack, the 21-year-old swung his arm back in the direction of Peque.

From here, the latter went to ground holding his face, adamant that he had been struck. Replays have not yet cleared up whether Arda did indeed connect with the face of Peque, but the Real Madrid man certainly risked a sending off with his actions.

24 hours on from Real Madrid’s fans complaining about officiating favouring Barcelona, the Blancos faithful may well have benefitted from some luck of their own…

*Update* – Kylian Mbappé has since put the hosts two goals to the good in Spain’s capital.
