Former Barcelona star reveals he maintains ‘a strong relationship’ with Hansi Flick

A former member of the defensive ranks at La Liga champions Barcelona has revealed that he remains close with Blaugrana head coach Hansi Flick.

The player in question? Iñigo Martínez.

Defender Iñigo of course made the surprise call to bring a close to his time on the books of Barcelona over the summer.

In the face of a big-money offer from Saudi outfit Al-Nassr, the Spanish international left European football behind.

His absence has since been sorely felt in Barca’s backline, with both Iñigo’s leadership and defensive qualities dearly missed.

As alluded to above, though, this has not prevented the 34-year-old from maintaining a close relationship with Hansi Flick.

Speaking during an interview with COPE, as cited by Diario Sport, this week, Iñigo explained:

“I didn’t even dare to tell him that I was leaving. I caught him on the plane, I think. For him, I was a key piece and when I leave the puzzle breaks a bit. I have a lot of appreciation for him and it is something reciprocal, I maintain a relationship with him. He was the first one who bet on me as soon as I arrived.”
