Ex-Barcelona and Sevilla defender Dani Alves has today been sentenced to four years and six months in prison.
This comes with the Brazilian having been found guilty of sexual assault.
Alves has been in custody since January of 2023, in relation to an incident in the bathroom of a nightclub in Barcelona the prior December.
Despite having maintained his innocence throughout trial proceedings, the court today voted in favour of the victim of the assault, meaning Alves is facing up to an extended spell behind bars.
As confirmed by journalist Fabrizio Romano:
‘Dani Alves has been sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in prison for sexual assault.’
The sentence also includes a further five years of supervised release, as well as a restraining order stemming nine years and six months.
Finally, he will be forced to pay the victim a substantial damages fee, understood to come in at €150,000.
Alves’ lawyer confirmed that he and his team intend to appeal the ruling.
