Ferland Mendy sparks internal conflict at Real Madrid

An interesting story surrounding the future of Real Madrid star Ferland Mendy has come to the fore in the early hours of Thursday.

This comes amid claims on the part of Diario AS that the French international has sparked a heated internal debate in Spain’s capital.

It is of course common knowledge that left-back reinforcements are expected to make their way through the door at the Santiago Bernabéu this summer, amid Real’s long-standing pursuit of Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies.

Should Davies, as expected, go on to arrive, this will mean that one of the current left-back options at the disposal of Carlo Ancelotti, in turn, will be moved on.

Just weeks ago, it was widely agreed that the aforementioned Ferland Mendy would be the man in question, with Fran García set to act as backup to Davies.

This comes with the former’s contract due to expire in a little over a year’s time, making the coming summer transfer window Los Blancos’ last real shot at securing any sort of significant sum for his signature.

And yet, as alluded to above, the situation has now been thrown completely up in the air.

This comes amid the claim that Ancelotti and his coaching staff have gone back on their word regarding Mendy, now keen to maintain his services into next season.

The 28-year-old, to his credit, has looked vastly improved this season, with his form over recent months in particular having seen Real’s headmaster label Mendy ‘defensively, the best left-back in the world’.

With Florentino Pérez and the Real board nevertheless keen to sell, something of an impasse has therefore been reached.
