Athletic Club head coach Nico Williams has provided his response to the recent criticism aimed in the direction of Nico Williams by the club’s supporters.
Wide-man Nico was for his part back in from the off on Wednesday, as Athletic kicked their Champions League back into gear in a meeting with Qarabag.
When all was said and done, the Basque outfit emerged on the right side of a 3-1 result.
The aforementioned Nico, however, endured a somewhat hit-and-miss outing, struggling to make an impact in the final third.
Upon the Spanish international being hooked from proceedings during the 2nd-half, the Athletic Club faithful therefore made their frustrations known, by way of a round of jeers and whistles.
During his latest press conference on Friday, the subject of such criticism was in turn put to Ernesto Valverde.
And Athletic’s headmaster went on to respond as follows:
“I don’t have much of an opinion, nor do I listen to much about what you’re telling me. Nico is a player who always tries, Nico, Berenguer, Serrano, Navarro, Willi (Iñaki Williams), Guruzeta … Forwards have to do that always. There are days when they’re more fortunate and other days when they’re less so. Nico had a very good first half, by the second he was very tired, and that’s it.”
