Elche star could face 10-match ban for racist insult vs Espanyol

Elche star Rafa Mir could be facing up to a lengthy incoming spell away from the pitch.

This comes with the striker accused of racially abusing Espanyol’s Omar El Hilali on Sunday afternoon.

Elche played host to Espanyol earlier today, giving rise to an entertaining four-goal affair which saw the two sides forced to settle for a share of the spoils.

The aforementioned Rafa Mir proved himself decisive when it comes to the scoreline, notching a last-gasp penalty to level things up at 2-2.

As alluded to above, however, in the game’s aftermath, the name of frontman Mir has taken its place centre stage in the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

As per the referee’s official post-match report:

“In the 78th minute, RCD Espanyol player number 23, Mr. Omar El Hilali, informed me that
Elche CF player number 10, Mr. Rafael Mir Vicente , addressed him in the following terms: ‘You came in a dinghy,’ which could not be heard by any of the members of the refereeing team. Consequently, I proceeded to activate the anti-racism protocol, which is why the match was stopped for 3 minutes.”

In the case of Mir being found guilty of the alleged offence, according to Mundo Deportivo:

‘The Elche player could face a suspension of up to ten matches under Article 105.’
