AZ Alkmaar starlet Kees Smit has this week opened up on the alleged interest in his signature stemming from La Liga.
Smit, for those not familiar with his name, is a 19-year-old midfielder, who is currently plying his club trade in his home country of the Netherlands, with the aforementioned AZ .
The starlet is fresh off something of a breakout season in 2024/25, which saw him rack up 25 appearances across all competitions in Alkmaar’s colours.
It was Smit’s performances at the recently-completed U19 European Championships, though, which saw clubs across the continent truly take note of the youngster’s talents.
Smit played a leading role in the Netherlands ultimately clinching glory at the Euros, named Player of the Tournament late last month.
Such exploits, it is understood, have piqued the attentions of Spanish football’s two leading clubs.
Speaking during an interview with HN Nieuws, as cited by Diario AS, early this week, the subject of such speculation was in turn put to Smit himself.
And the talented engine room performer, in his response, appeared to confirm the interest of Barcelona and Real Madrid alike:
“First, I want to show here that I can do well and be important. The interest from Barcelona and Real Madrid is positive, but if I go there, I don’t know how many times I’ll play. I enjoyed watching it and reading about it.”
Smit continued:
“They’re very good things, without a doubt, perhaps the two biggest clubs in the world. Nothing is concrete. There’s just interest.”
